SP3 Understanding lived experiences: a novel undergraduate paediatric work-based learning placement

Introduction and Aim Pharmacy undergraduate education training is undergoing a transformation as placement providers Schools of look to create more meaningful learning experiences. Work-based involves the students within work environment experience take part in work-related activities. In majority these experiences are adult care. The aim this was provide pharmacy with paediatric specific focus on patient family centred Method A novel work-based designed for year 4 hospital North-East England. Students attended one three-hour session alternate weeks total five. premise pairs ward talk children, families, carers about their lived child’s condition, not give advice or medication use, but rather intentionally unstructured so that could discuss broader topics understanding families’ develop patient-centred approach consultations. document conversations reported back supervisor (a clinical pharmacist) who conducted debrief. This represents content analysis activities present innovative educational intervention; no ethical approval required. Results 42 took between January May 2021. worked across mixture five wards including respiratory, neurology surgery. spoke child inpatients, members parents, siblings, extended family, carers/other legal guardians. Topics varied included: medicine explanation diseases non-pharmaceutical treatments by families students, discussion impact education, parental work, homelife siblings. were exposed range circumstance e.g. low income, ethnic minority cared also seriousness longevity admission end life care, tonsilitis appendectomy, Crohn’s disease, asthma bronchiolitis, epilepsy genetic conditions illnesses. appeared have greater awareness care grow confidence talking children directly members/carers. engaged willing share at times spent long periods some taking ownership teaching them. It appears recognised an opportunity raise disease teach future professionals. Conclusion demonstrates training. demonstrated improved consultations through being areas, types patients families. enjoy sharing
